Shivamogga Superintendent of Police B. Nikhil has appealed to students to use social media and artificial intelligence (AI) tools responsibly, warning that careless use can harm their careers and futures.

Addressing students at the university’s 40th foundation day at Kuvempu University campus in Shankaraghatta on Tuesday, Mr. Nikhil said that unethical activities originating on social media are on the rise. He said it was therefore important for young people to use social media platforms and AI responsibly.

He cautioned that posts and comments that violate the law on social media platforms while hiding one’s identity or unwittingly, can ruin a student’s career and future. “Once you log in and use digital media, your digital footprints cannot be erased,” he said.

On AI, Mr. Nikhil said it has been spreading into every field, including education. AI tools should be used to supplement studies and not relied on entirely, he said.

He also urged students not to feel dejected if they do not land high-ranking posts, which many young graduates consider the mark of success. “Performing any job you choose with sincerity is the real achievement,” he said.

Vice-Chancellor Sharath Ananthamurthy said students should not confine themselves to their textbooks and should take an active part in art, literature and cultural activities. He said the university would provide more opportunities for distinctive learning experiences in the coming days.

Registrar (Evaluation) Prof. R. Thimmarayappa, Dean of Student Welfare Prof. G. Prashanth Naik, deans Prof. S.K. Narasimhamurthy and Prof. Gajanana Prabhu, extracurricular activities coordinator Dr. Talawar Venkatesh, faculty members, non-teaching staff and students were present.
