Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says advanced environmental technology developed by a Japanese company could offer sustainable solutions to restoring water bodies and lands polluted by illegal mining.

In a post on Tuesday, November 3, following a study tour of Japan, Dr Bawumia said he had visited 3R, an environmental technology company specialising in sustainable innovation.

He said the company had developed technology capable of recycling water and cleaning contaminated soil by removing harmful heavy metals, including mercury.

Dr Bawumia described the technology as a promising innovation, particularly as Ghana continues to grapple with the environmental damage caused by illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey.

“Seeing this innovation firsthand was truly inspiring, especially as we look for sustainable, long-term solutions to restore our lands and water bodies impacted by Galamsey,” he said.

He noted that the technology demonstrated how innovation, determination and foresight could help restore degraded environments, protect natural resources and secure a cleaner future for generations.

Dr Bawumia also expressed appreciation to the leadership and technical team at 3R for hosting the delegation and sharing insights into their work.

He said the experience had reinforced the importance of exploring technological solutions to address environmental challenges and support efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
