The Ghana Police Service has arrested three Nigerian nationals suspected of belonging to a criminal syndicate allegedly involved in a series of robberies targeting bank customers in Kumasi and its surrounding communities.
In a statement signed by Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Ashanti Regional Police Command's Public Affairs Unit, the Command said the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation by an IGP's Special Team on Saturday, 31 October 2026, to apprehend the suspected members of the group.
The operation, according to the police took place at about 11.30 p.m., involved personnel from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters and the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID).
Providing details of the exercise, the Police said the operation led to the arrest of two Nigerian nationals, Aboy Promise, 30, and Favour Uwalaka, 45, at a hotel in Moshie Zongo, Kumasi.
A search of their rooms uncovered GH¢1,600 in cash, assorted mobile phones, a Royal motorbike and a master key suspected to have been used to gain unauthorised access to vehicles belonging to bank customers.
The Command, detailing the items recovered during the operation, stated: "A search conducted in their rooms resulted in the recovery of GH¢1,600.00, assorted mobile phones, a Royal motorbike and a master key used to gain unauthorised access to victims' vehicles and steal cash."
Investigations into the alleged activities of the suspects have pointed to a pattern of targeting individuals who withdraw substantial amounts of money from banks.
According to the Police, the syndicate monitored banking premises, identified customers who made large withdrawals and followed them before attacking and robbing them.
The Command explained that the group also allegedly broke into unattended vehicles belonging to bank customers, using a master key to access the cars and steal cash kept inside.
During interrogation, the two arrested suspects reportedly admitted their involvement in the robberies and provided information about two other alleged accomplices.
The Police disclosed that the suspects identified the individuals as Chinedu, alias Alhaji, and Kingsley, alias KC.
Acting on the information obtained, the police team proceeded to another hotel at Dechemso, a suburb of Kumasi, where the third suspect, Kingsley, alias KC, aged 35, was arrested. He is also a Nigerian national.
However, the fourth suspected member of the group, Chinedu, alias Alhaji, remains at large.
Appealing for public assistance to locate him, the Ashanti Regional Police Command urged anyone with credible information about his whereabouts to report to the nearest police station.
The Command stated: "The Command is appealing to the general public to volunteer any credible information that could lead to his arrest."
It further advised the public to contact the Police through emergency numbers 191 and 112 or the toll-free MTN and Telecel line 18555.
The Police also disclosed that the three suspects had admitted to robbing a victim of GH¢15,000 at Asokore Mampong on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, after the individual withdrew the money from Kwamang Rural Bank.
Providing further details of the alleged offences, the Command said the suspects had also admitted to similar robberies at the Atonsu branch of Fidelity Bank, the Ahodwo branch of Access Bank and other locations within Kumasi and its surrounding communities.
The three arrested suspects have since been handed over to the Ashanti Regional Police Command and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
Meanwhile, the Police have urged bank customers to exercise caution when conducting financial transactions, particularly when withdrawing large sums of money or leaving banking premises.
The Command advised customers to remain alert to suspicious individuals around banking facilities and avoid leaving cash or other valuables unattended in their vehicles.
Reinforcing the safety advisory, the Police stated: "The Command cautions bank customers to remain vigilant, be alert to suspicious persons around banking premises and avoid leaving cash or other valuables unattended in vehicles."
The Command commended members of the public for their continued cooperation and assured residents of its commitment to combating robbery and other criminal activities across the Ashanti Region.
