NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 3 – Pregnancy-related deaths in Kenya have declined, with the latest national survey showing a reduction in the mortality rate compared to figures recorded in 2014.

The 2025/2026 Kenya Mini Demographic and Health Survey puts pregnancy-related mortality at 287 deaths per 100,000 live births, down from 362 deaths recorded in the 2014 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey.

The findings point to progress in maternal health, although pregnancy-related deaths remain a major concern for the country’s healthcare system.

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) officials said the latest survey was able to measure pregnancy-related mortality alongside childhood and adult mortality indicators, providing updated data to guide health policy and planning.

The survey also highlights improvements in access to maternal healthcare, with deliveries in health facilities rising to 91 per cent from 88 per cent in 2022.

Skilled birth attendance has similarly increased to 92 per cent from 89 per cent, while the proportion of women attending at least four antenatal care visits has risen to 72 per cent from 66 per cent.

World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Kenya Neema Kimambo said the findings should be translated into practical improvements in health services.

“Better information must translate into practical changes in health, nutrition, reproductive health, and services responding to gender-based violence,” Kimambo said.

The findings are expected to inform national and county government planning as Kenya seeks to strengthen maternal healthcare, improve access to reproductive health services and reduce preventable deaths.
