‘You can’t be in NDC and expect that you do same thing NPP does’ – Fifi Kwetey
NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has warned party members that they cannot repeat the misconduct they accused the NPP of and expect protection. The NDC also directed Obuasi SHTS headmaster Zakaria Abdulai to step aside from its Juaben constituency chairmanship race pending a CID investigation.
NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has warned party members that they cannot repeat the misconduct they accused the NPP of and expect protection.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, November 3, he said the governing party must demonstrate accountability by acting against its own members.
“So you can't be in NDC and expect that you do the same thing NPP does and expect the party to cover you. No, there's no cover-up.”
Mr Kwetey said the NDC must remain humble about its return to power. Voters, he argued, rejected the NPP’s conduct rather than rewarded any exceptional quality in the NDC.
“Now, so when you come and try to repeat what the NPP does, you are literally just digging your own grave.”
His warning comes amid scrutiny over the World Cup visa scandal and sexual abuse allegations at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
In the visa case, President John Mahama asked National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah to step aside. Police are investigating alleged irregularities involving World Cup visa arrangements. Ampofo Ankrah denies wrongdoing.
The NDC also directed Obuasi SHTS headmaster Zakaria Abdulai to step aside from its Juaben constituency chairmanship race pending a CID investigation.
That followed an initial withdrawal directive which the party reversed before reinstating its position. The party said its latest decision did not determine his guilt.
Mr Kwetey insisted that accountability must start within the NDC, stressing, “The real punishment is the one meted out to somebody in the NDC.”
He argued that the party’s historical foundations placed a higher responsibility on its members. He cited executions associated with those foundations as the basis for his position.
For him, the test was how the government responded when wrongdoing occurred.
“But the way you deal with them is what matters. And I can tell you, the president is not going to cover anyone,” he stated.
He said party loyalty would not prevent disciplinary action: “Because we don't have a problem punishing our members.”
Mr Kwetey warned that members unable to meet the required standard could lose their positions.
“If you are not capable of doing what is right. Other people would take that position and do it,” he stated.
