Nyoro challenges Gachagua’s numbers-first approach to 2027 race, roots for quality

Nyoro challenges Gachagua’s numbers-first approach to 2027 race, roots for quality

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 4 — People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) leader Ndindi Nyoro has challenged the opposition to look beyond voter numbers in identifying a joint presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, saying leadership quality and experience should carry equal weight. Nyoro also defended PPK’s participation in opposition activities, dismissing claims by leaders from Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) that its independent mobilisation could split opposition votes.

Nyoro cautioned against settling on a candidate solely on their ability to mobilise votes, warning that the opposition must avoid replacing President William Ruto with a leader who would replicate the shortcomings of the current administration.

“We cannot make the same mistake of electing another Ruto to replace Ruto,” the Kiharu MP said during public engagements in Mathioya and Kangema constituencies in Murang’a on Wednesday.

His remarks come amid growing differences within the opposition over the strategy for unseating Ruto, with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua insisting that consolidating sufficient voter numbers should be the priority.

Nyoro acknowledged the importance of mobilisation but said the opposition must also scrutinise the credentials of those seeking to lead the country.

“Numbers are important. You ask for votes when you go out to speak to people. We must go out and converse for votes. But equally important is the quality of leaders who are going to be the flag bearer and the running mate next year,” he said.

The PPK leader urged Kenyans to assess the track records of potential candidates, noting that they had served in different capacities, including as teachers, Members of Parliament, senators and government administrators.

“There is no leader who was born today or yesterday. Let us evaluate all the leaders who want to lead our country by the quality of leadership they offered wherever they have served,” Nyoro said.

He argued that the country’s challenges should inform the choice of its next leader, suggesting that different national priorities require candidates with relevant experience.

“If we assess our position and realise we are going to war as a country, then the right person for the job would be a General. If the issue is the economy, then we must pick an economist,” he said.

Nyoro also defended PPK’s participation in opposition activities, dismissing claims by leaders from Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) that its independent mobilisation could split opposition votes.

He said his party was mobilising support across different regions and directing it towards a common agenda of unseating Ruto.

Nyoro added that he was ready to take up the presidential challenge if the coalition settled on him as its candidate.

The response by Kiharu MP comes a day after Gachagua challenged opposition leaders to focus on grassroots mobilisation rather than criticising his approach to building an electoral base.

“I will not be lectured by leaders who sit in boardrooms. This seat (presidential) is not cigarette smoke to be shared,” the DCP leader remarked, addressing supporters at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri.

Gachagua maintained that removing Ruto from power would require numbers, arguing that press conferences, political declarations and competing manifestos would not deliver victory without sufficient voter support.

He urged his colleagues to go out and seek votes, saying he would support whoever the opposition ultimately selects to challenge Ruto.

Nyoro, however, warned that regional supremacy contests and political chest-thumping could undermine efforts to build a national coalition, urging leaders to embrace one another regardless of their respective voter numbers.
