Renowned Ghanaian MC Alfred Kabutey Ocansey, popularly known as ‘MC Kabutey’, has recounted how two disappointing experiences at weddings in 2011 inspired him to venture into professional event hosting, despite having no prior experience as an MC.

Speaking on The Career Trail Season 4 on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, he said watching two different MCs struggle to entertain guests at separate weddings made him believe he could do a better job.

He recalled attending a wedding with his family in January 2011. Although the event had all the makings of a beautiful celebration, the MC's performance left much to be desired.

According to him, the couple appeared unhappy with how their special day was unfolding, prompting him to question why someone who could not properly engage an audience had been given the responsibility of hosting the event.

“I was sitting there, watching this MC, and I was looking at the couple, and I could see how they were regretting and they were feeling sad. And I was like, oh, they deserve better,” he recounted.

A week later, he attended another wedding where he witnessed a similar situation. This time, the thought that he could do a better job would not leave him.

He eventually decided to take a small step towards exploring the idea.

At about 7:30 am on a Friday in January 2011, while at work, he created a Facebook page called Kabutey My MC.

“I've not done anything MC before. I've never hosted an event. I just created the page. I just wanted to do something to release the tension I was feeling inside my spirit,” he recalled.

To his surprise, barely five hours after creating the page, he received a message from a woman preparing for her wedding.

“She said, ‘Oh, thank God I've discovered your page. I'm about to get married, and I've told myself I don't want to use any uncle or any cousin, because I've seen people destroy people's events. So I'm looking for a professional. I've been looking for somebody for the past three months. I couldn't find anybody. So out of desperation, today, I just said, as a last resort, let me just go to Facebook and search,’” he recounted.

“What even makes you think, when you haven't seen any picture?” he remembered asking her.

Her response has stayed with him over the years.

“She said, ‘The fact that you had the confidence to even create a page tells me that you will be better than just some neighbour or some friend or some family member who I think will do a good job,’” he disclosed.

That conversation led to his first booking as a professional MC. He hosted Myra and Fred's wedding on April 30, 2011.

But what happened at the wedding gave him even more reason to pursue the new venture. He said six people approached him after the event to book him for their own occasions.

Without business cards or any promotional material, he resorted to writing his phone number on pieces of tissue paper and handing them to prospective clients.

“That day, I got booked for six other events,” he noted.

Fifteen years later, what started as an idea inspired by two poorly hosted weddings has become his full-time profession. Looking back, MC Kabutey believes his childhood experiences had prepared him for a career he had not even considered.

“So, you know, my childhood had prepared me for that day. I just did not know. Because of all the extracurricular things I partook in at school and church. You know, poetry from primary school, debating club from JHS, theatre experience from KNUST. You know, church, we're doing Children's Day. They'll call you to come and introduce a pastor or come and do opening prayer. Those things had prepared me already,” he highlighted.

However, he did not rely on those experiences alone. With Myra's wedding about three months away, he began researching how to become an MC. After finding little practical material online, he decided to develop his own approach to hosting events. He identified nine different types of events he could potentially host and chose weddings as his starting point.

He then mapped out how a typical wedding programme should run, considering how he could make each segment interesting while ensuring the event flowed smoothly.

One of the things he wanted to do differently was incorporate storytelling into his delivery. Using the opening prayer as an example, he explained that rather than simply announcing the pastor and inviting him to pray, he would first connect the moment to the meaning of the occasion.

For him, it was about giving ordinary moments at an event more meaning and making the experience memorable for guests.

His story offers a lesson for aspiring entrepreneurs and young people looking to build careers from their interests: sometimes, the first step is simply acting on an idea, even when you do not have everything figured out.
