A country Victorian election candidate has had a bullet shot through one of his campaign signs.
A volunteer for independent candidate for Benambra, Lachlan McKeeman, discovered the bullet hole in the sign at Rutherglen yesterday.
Police are investigating, amid calls for an end to violence and intimidation in politics.
Police are investigating after a bullet hole was found in a political sign in north-east Victoria.
The campaign sign for independent candidate for Benambra, Lachlan McKeeman, was in a paddock on private property at Rutherglen on Trimbles Lane.
A campaign volunteer for Mr McKeeman discovered the bullet hole in the sign on Wednesday morning.
The sign is believed to have been damaged between 6pm on Tuesday and 8am on Wednesday.
Police said it was not clear whether the shot was politically motivated.
The alleged shooting comes amid calls for increased civility in politics.
"Following the incidents involving Dr Helen Haines and the One Nation volunteer in Torquay, we should all draw the same line: violence and intimidation, in all their forms, have no place in our democracy or society," Mr McKeeman said in a statement.
"I want to be clear: I'm determined to win this election, because it's our opportunity to turn the page on divisive politics, and choose hope, decency and get politics working for us," he said.
Police investigations are still underway into the alleged attack on Indi MP Helen Haines outside her electoral office in Wangaratta last month.
Victoria Police said detectives were not treating the assault of a One Nation volunteer in Torquay on Sunday as politically motivated.
