2027 Budget won’t get rubber-stamp treatment by supermajority – Agalga

Majority Leader in Parliament, James Agalga, has dismissed suggestions that the governing National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) numerical strength in the House could undermine parliamentary scrutiny of the 2027 Budget, insisting that the legislature will not abandon its oversight responsibilities. Mr Agalga’s assurance signals that the Majority leadership intends to maintain Parliament’s scrutiny of the Executive’s proposals despite the governing party’s commanding position in the House.

Majority Leader in Parliament, James Agalga, has dismissed suggestions that the governing National Democratic Congress' (NDC) numerical strength in the House could undermine parliamentary scrutiny of the 2027 Budget, insisting that the legislature will not abandon its oversight responsibilities.

He said although the NDC enjoyed a super majority, that advantage would not prevent Parliament from critically examining proposals brought before it by the Executive.

Mr Agalga gave the assurance in an interview on Joy News' PM Express on Wednesday, November 3, ahead of the presentation of the 2027 Budget.

His comments come amid concerns that the governing party's overwhelming numbers in Parliament could make it easier for the government to secure approval for its fiscal proposals without sufficient scrutiny.

But the Majority Leader said the size of the Majority caucus should not be mistaken for a willingness to rubber-stamp government policies and expenditure plans.

"We have a super majority. But that is not to say we relent in our efforts to ensure that Parliament's mandate to scrutinise whatever the Executive arm of government brings up before the legislature is done effectively," he said.

He maintained that Parliament would continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities, regardless of the numerical advantage enjoyed by the governing side.

"So, never mind we have a super majority, but we will do what is expected of us as the legislative arm of government," he added.

The 2027 Budget is expected to outline the government's revenue and expenditure priorities, economic targets and policy measures for the coming fiscal year.

Parliament's consideration of the estimates and accompanying policy proposals will provide an opportunity for members to examine the government's spending plans, question allocations and assess the implications of its proposed fiscal measures.

Mr Agalga's assurance signals that the Majority leadership intends to maintain Parliament's scrutiny of the Executive's proposals despite the governing party's commanding position in the House.
