Manager Mikel Arteta made six changes to the team that beat Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, with Gyokeres leading the line in place of Kai Havertz.

The Swedish striker played a huge part in the opening goal, hooking the ball behind the Slavia Prague defence for Noni Madueke to race on and finish confidently in the ninth minute.

Gyokeres added the second himself before half-time after he exchanged passes with Mikel Merino and curled an excellent finish in off the post.

Slavia Prague improved after the break, and David Raya had to make a good save almost immediately to deny Oskar Kubiak, who shot from the edge of the box.

Gabriel Magalhaes cleared the ball off the line after a Mojmir Chytil header following a corner, and the home side eventually pulled one back when Wiktor Nowak scored from close range in the 90th minute.

The Gunners, who had a 100% record in this stage of the competition last season, are unbeaten after their first four games this season and sit third in the table behind Paris St-Germain and Real Madrid.

"This is a team that has huge spirit, huge conviction and if you give them something, they will grab it," said Arteta after the game.

"We were extremely far from our standards. We fell short on everything, from the basics to every concept we discussed, and in everything we tried to avoid in the second half.

"Very far from the standards we expect from each other, but we found a way to hold on to the result and win the game."

Viktor Gyökeres the difference as Arsenal claim nervy win against Slavia Prague

This time, the much-maligned Viktor Gyökeres stole the show as poor Slavia Prague matched the longest winless streak in European Cup and Champions League history despite a spirited late comeback. After last week’s wobble against Fleetwood, there was no prospect of Arsenal making the same mistake again as soon as Noni Madueke fired them ahead early on after being superbly set up by Gyökeres.

Arsenal’s French international centre-back William Saliba returned to training with the Premier League champions on Tuesday for the first time this season. Despite his return to light training, Saliba is unlikely to feature for Arsenal in Prague, or be called up by France coach Zinedine Zidane for his country’s Nations League matches against Italy and Turkey later this month.

Another ‘miracle’ in Istanbul – but this one hurt Liverpool

When it comes to comebacks, Liverpool and Istanbul have plenty of history – but this time Andoni Iraola’s side made the wrong kind. Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood benefited from a slice of luck when his free-kick deflected in off Jeremy Jacquet in the first half for Fenerbahce’s first equaliser, and Liverpool only had themselves to blame when Cody Gakpo’s header took the ball past Alisson and gave Birmingham-born Archie Brown a tap in to make it 2-2.

Liverpool collapse to Champions League defeat at Fenerbahce

Dirk Kuyt got the better of his former club Liverpool as Fenerbahce twice came from behind for a famous 3-2 win in Istanbul that breathed new life into their Champions League campaign. Liverpool’s perfect Champions League start allowed Iraola the luxury of leaving out Isak and Florian Wirtz among five changes from Sunday’s 1-0 defeat by Arsenal.
