Police have launched an investigation into the death of a 56-year-old farmer whose body was discovered in a room at Assin Ketukrom in the Assin North District of the Central Region, with a suspected gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The deceased, identified as Kofi Sackey, was found lying on his back with a single-barrelled gun resting on his stomach on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

Although the circumstances point to a suspected suicide, investigators are working to establish what happened before his death.

A police report said the case was brought to the attention of the Assin Praso District Police Command at about noon by the deceased’s younger brother, Kofi Ansah.

Mr Ansah reportedly told the police that he had returned from the farm at about 11:15 a.m. when he found his elder brother lying in a pool of blood in his room.

A team of officers led by the District Commander, Superintendent Eric Yao Avudzivi, subsequently visited the house.

They found the body in the middle of the room, with what appeared to be a deep gunshot wound to the abdomen, slightly above the navel. The firearm was found resting on the body.

Information gathered by the police suggested that the incident occurred shortly before the body was discovered.

A nephew, Acquah Emmanuel, told investigators that he had been watching television with other family members when Mr Sackey walked out of the room at about 11 a.m.

A few minutes later, they heard a sound resembling a gunshot.

The family members reportedly went outside to establish what had happened but found no one. It was only after Mr Ansah returned from the farm that the deceased was found in the room.

The police documented the scene, took photographs and conveyed the body to the New Edubiase Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Police investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and verify the accounts given by witnesses.
