Kalonzo revives Raila’s Canaan dream during Migori tour

NAIROBI, Kenya Nov 3 – Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged the Luo community to keep alive Raila Odinga’s political dream, declaring that the journey to Canaan is far from over despite the former Prime Minister’s death.

Speaking in Sori, Migori County, Kalonzo told residents that those who remain must continue the struggle for the ideals Raila championed during his political career.

“Baba’s journey to go to Canaan is still there. It is important for those of us who remain alive to ensure we get to Canaan,” Kalonzo said, drawing cheers from the crowd.

He called on Raila’s supporters to unite behind the opposition’s push for political change, saying the movement must now continue the work the late ODM leader had started.

Kalonzo also accused some politicians of pretending to be Raila’s friends while abandoning the ideals he stood for.

“While Baba is sleeping, others are pretending they are the friends of Raila,” he said.

The Wiper leader recalled his 15-year political partnership with Raila, saying he had repeatedly supported his efforts to become Kenya’s President.

He also credited Raila with playing a major role in the introduction of the 2010 Constitution and devolution, arguing that counties such as Migori, Homa Bay and Machakos benefited from the reforms.

“If it were not for Baba, would you have Migori County? Would you have Homa Bay County? He is the father of devolution,” Kalonzo told the gathering.

Kalonzo further pledged to continue pursuing Raila’s vision of a country where young people enjoy their rights and are not subjected to unlawful arrests.

He referenced the death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody in June 2025, as he criticised the state of human rights in the country.

“Raila’s Azimio was about wanting a country where youths are not arrested,” he said.

The opposition leader also renewed his criticism of President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of corruption and failing to address the rising cost of living.

He cited rising fuel prices, financial challenges facing universities and claims of unpaid teachers as some of the issues facing Kenyans.

Reviving Raila’s famous ‘tired donkey’ message, Kalonzo told the crowd that the economic situation had deteriorated further.

“When Baba was saying the donkey is tired, now even the donkey has fallen down,” he said.

He also called for opposition unity ahead of the 2027 General Election, declaring that Ruto had lost political influence across the country.

“Ruto has lost influence across the whole of Kenya. He is even lucky to do one term,” Kalonzo said, leading supporters in chanting the one-term message.

Kalonzo said he was working with other opposition leaders to unite Kenyans behind the opposition movement.

Kalonzo vowed to keep Raila’s political vision alive, insisting that the former Prime Minister’s legacy of constitutionalism, devolution and human rights should not be abandoned.
