Employees’ union protests against ‘attempts to destroy PSC’ in Keralam

State secretary M.V. Govindan accuses UDF government and a section of the media of continuing a slanderous attack on the PSC to facilitate contract appointments

Amid an ongoing investigation into the alleged discrepancies in some examinations conducted by the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC), the Kerala PSC Employees Union organised a protest in front of the Secretariat on Thursday demanding an end to the “attempts to destroy the PSC.”

Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary M.V. Govindan, who inaugurated the protest, accused the United Democratic Front (UDF) government and a section of the media of continuing a slanderous attack on the PSC to facilitate contract appointments.

“Kerala PSC carries out 60% of the total permanent appointments in India. Even the chairpersons of various public service commissions, including the Union Public Service Commission, have attested to the excellence of Kerala PSC. Keralam, which has a population of only three-and-a- half crore, makes many more appointments than the PSC in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous State. It is such an institution which is now under attack,” he said.

Union president K. Sebastian presided. The union, which boycotted work and organised a strike at the PSC headquarters on Wednesday, said in a statement that a technical error in the evaluation of the Planning Board Chief post is being wrongly portrayed as corruption and irregularities. The government has launched a Crime Branch investigation and filed a criminal case against the employees even though there is a strong law in place to take departmental action for lapses in official duties. Taking such cruel measures on the basis of mistakes that occur as part of work is unacceptable, said the union.

The Crime Branch arrested former Deputy Secretary P. Satheesh (who retired from service a year ago) and Additional Secretary R. Hari, who were associated with the evaluation process. While Mr. Hari has also been placed under suspension, pending inquiry, the retirement benefits of Mr. Satheesh have been withheld by the State government.
