A 10-year-old girl has died and a woman is in a serious condition in hospital after a two-car crash near Somerset in Tasmania's north-west.

A child has died and a woman remains in a serious condition after a two-vehicle crash in Tasmania's north-west on Thursday afternoon.

The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were taken to a Burnie hospital for assessment and treatment.

An investigation into the incident continues.

A 10-year-old girl has died and a woman remains in a serious condition after a head-on collision in Tasmania's north-west.

Emergency services were called to the Bass Highway, near Somerset, shortly after 5:30pm yesterday after reports that a white Suburu travelling east had collided with a Toyota Hilux ute driving in the opposite direction.

The girl, who was a passenger in the Suburu, died at the scene.

The female driver of that car was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.

The male driver of the ute and his passenger were taken to the North West Regional Hospital at Burnie for assessment and treatment for what is understood to be non-life-threatening injuries, Tasmania Police said.

Shortly after the incident, the road was closed to traffic in both directions from the intersection of McKays Road and Bass Highway at Somerset, to the intersection of Old Bass Highway and the Bass Highway at Doctors Rocks.

Tasmania Police are calling on witnesses or anyone who may have dash-cam footage leading to the incident to contact police on 131 444.
