Former LSK President demands prosecution of attackers who disrupted opposition tour

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 6 – Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has condemned the violent attack against opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa and Justin Muturi in Migori, demanding investigations and prosecution of those responsible. The delegation, which included Kalonzo Musyoka, former Attorney General Justin Muturi and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, was reportedly confronted by a group of about 10 youths who pelted their convoy with stones, damaging several vehicles and shattering windows.

Odhiambo said the attack on the leaders and their teams on Thursday, November 5, infringed their constitutional rights to political participation, freedom of expression, and personal security.

She questioned the continued incidents of political violence despite repeated condemnations and assurances by authorities that investigations would be conducted.

“Nobody should have to brave stones to address fellow Kenyans and exercise their democratic and political rights. Nobody should have their constitutionally guaranteed security undermined on account of holding divergent political views,” she said.

Odhiambo expressed concern that political attacks had become recurrent, with authorities issuing condemnations and promising investigations without sufficient action to prevent similar incidents.

She warned that the country could not afford to wait until lives were lost before treating political violence as a serious security concern.

“Shattered windows can be replaced, but a life lost cannot,” she said.

The former LSK president called on police to identify those who carried out the attack and investigate individuals who may have organised or financed the violence.

She also demanded an independent investigation into the conduct of police officers during the incident, insisting that security agencies must be held accountable for their actions.

Odhiambo argued that merely announcing investigations was not enough, urging authorities to ensure those found culpable face the law.

“Another promise of investigations is not accountability. Protecting peaceful political participation is the state’s duty,” she said.

The attack occurred as Kalonzo, Wamalwa and Muturi toured the South Nyanza region to engage residents as part of their political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Their convoy was pelted with stones, leaving several vehicles damaged, including those belonging to the opposition leaders.

The attack occurred on Thursday, November 5, 2026, as the opposition leaders toured the Nyanza region as part of their political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The delegation, which included Kalonzo Musyoka, former Attorney General Justin Muturi and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, was reportedly confronted by a group of about 10 youths who pelted their convoy with stones, damaging several vehicles and shattering windows.

Muturi’s vehicle was among those affected, while Kalonzo’s car also sustained damage to its front and rear sections.

The incident was followed by running battles involving suspected attackers and police, who fired teargas as the leaders engaged residents. Kalonzo questioned the police response, arguing that the gathering was peaceful and suggesting that the disruption was deliberate.

Despite the violence, the leaders vowed not to be intimidated and proceeded with their political engagements.
