Dreams Championship brings back high school rivalry

Ghana’s high school sporting rivalry is set for a revival with the introduction of the Dreams Championship, a multi-sport competition aimed at bringing schools, students and alumni together. The National Physical Education Coordinator of the Ghana Education Service, Michael Ayeh, has also welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important development for school sports and talent identification.

Ghana’s high school sporting rivalry is set for a revival with the introduction of the Dreams Championship, a multi-sport competition aimed at bringing schools, students and alumni together.

The competition, formerly known as Sprite Ball, which focused exclusively on basketball, has been rebranded and expanded to include multiple sporting disciplines in a move organisers say will provide greater opportunities for students to showcase their talents.

The Dreams Championship will bring together senior high schools from across the country, offering young athletes a platform to develop their skills, compete and pursue sporting excellence.

Beyond the sporting activities, the initiative also seeks to reignite the passion and pride associated with inter-school competitions by reconnecting former students, alumni associations and school communities with their institutions.

Project Lead Yaw Sakyi says the competition’s return marks the beginning of a bigger chapter in the development of school sports in Ghana.

“We are extremely excited about the return of Ghana’s high school sports competition, now reintroduced as the Dreams Championship. This is more than a return; it is the beginning of a bigger and better chapter in the history of inter-school sports in Ghana,” he said.

He added that the expansion from a basketball-only competition into a multi-sport event would create a bigger platform for students, schools and sports enthusiasts to be involved.

The National Physical Education Coordinator of the Ghana Education Service, Michael Ayeh, has also welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important development for school sports and talent identification.

He believes the competition will create more opportunities for students to discover and develop their sporting abilities while strengthening school identity and healthy rivalry.

The Dreams Championship is expected to combine competitive sports, entertainment and alumni engagement to establish itself as one of Ghana’s biggest inter-school sporting festivals.

Organisers say the vision goes beyond winning trophies, with the competition also seeking to build lasting legacies, celebrate school pride and create opportunities for the next generation of sporting talents.
