Former Madurai Corporation Deputy Mayor P.M. Mannan, now with the AIADMK, was arrested by the Central Crime Branch of Madurai City Police on Friday (November 6, 2026) in a case pertaining to “horse-trading” allegations made by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam MLA V.M.S. Mustafa. Mr. Mannan was later released on bail.

The MLA, representing the Madurai Central Assembly constituency, had lodged a complaint with the Madurai City Police, claiming that an attempt was made to bribe him to vote against the TVK-led government in a no-confidence motion, according to police sources.

After a day-long interrogation, the CCB formally arrested Mr. Mannan and produced him before the Special Court for trial of cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act in the evening. The judge refused to award judicial remand for him and let him off on personal bail. However, the court directed him to appear before the Investigating Officer, CCB, at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Based on Mr. Mustafa’s complaint, the CCB had registered a case against Mr. Mannan under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (Amendment of 2018) and for criminal conspiracy under Section 61 (2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Mr. Mannan was picked up by the police from his residence at Arappalayam in the early hours of Friday and taken to the Crime Branch office for questioning.

Mr. Mannan was the Deputy Mayor of Madurai between 2006 and 2011 as a DMK candidate and was a staunch loyalist of former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri till the 2026 Assembly election, when he switched to the AIADMK. Mr. Mustafa had recently claimed that he was offered ₹30 crore to vote against the TVK-led government.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday condemned the arrest of the former Madurai Deputy Mayor and criticised the police.

In a social media post, Mr. Palaniswami charged that a “false case” was foisted on Mr. Mannan and said the arrest was part of “diversion tactics”.

Mr. Palaniswami called for the release of Mr. Mannan and urged the TVK-led government to desist from such “political acts”.

AMMK founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran too criticised the TVK-led government, accusing it of discriminating between complaints against the ruling party and those against Opposition parties. He urged the Chief Minister to order investigations into complaints against persons belonging to the ruling party.
