One sister suffered a bullet injury to her back, while the other was grazed near her ear; police are investigating the motive behind the attack

The Koparkhairane police have registered an attempted murder and illegal firearm case against the arrested accused, Arjun Chavan, 22, and his fleeing accomplice, Rakesh Chavan.

Two sisters, 22 and 20, were injured after a man allegedly opened fire on them inside their home in Koparkhairane, Navi Mumbai, on Thursday night (November 5, 2026). Police have arrested a 22-year-old suspect in connection with the attack, while another accused remains absconding.

The incident took place around 9.30 p.m. in the SS-3 area of Sector 1, Koparkhairane. According to police, the elder sister sustained a grazing bullet injury near her ear, while the younger sister was shot in the back.

The Koparkhairane police have registered a case of attempted murder and offences relating to the illegal possession and use of a firearm.

The arrested accused has been identified as Arjun Chavan, 22, while his alleged accomplice, Rakesh Chavan, is on the run.

According to Nitin Pradeep Dhobi, the victims’ brother, the two sisters were at home with their mother when the attack occurred. Their father and Nitin were away at the time.

Nitin said a man entered the house, opened fire on his sisters and fled. He said his elder sister, 22, is employed, while his younger sister, 20, is a final-year student at Pillai College.

Following the shooting, both women were rushed to a Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) hospital for treatment. They were subsequently transferred to Sir JJ Hospital in Mumbai for further medical care.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone 1, Vijay M. Kharat said police had visited the NMMC hospital and spoken to the doctors treating the victims before they were shifted to Mumbai.

“Both injured women were immediately admitted to the NMMC hospital. We visited the hospital, spoke to the doctors and assessed their condition. They have now been shifted to JJ Hospital for further treatment,” Mr. Kharat said.

Police said the arrested accused originally hails from Solapur and lived behind the victims’ residence. Investigators are examining whether he was previously acquainted with the sisters and what may have prompted the shooting.

“The reason behind the firing, where the accused obtained the weapon and who else was involved in procuring it are all being investigated by the Koparkhairane police,” Mr. Kharat said.

He added that preliminary inquiries had not revealed any previous criminal record against the arrested accused, although a detailed background check was underway.

Police are also investigating the source of the firearm and the possible involvement of others in supplying it.

Mr. Kharat said the accused was being produced before a court, where police would seek his custody for further interrogation.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to trace the absconding accused, Rakesh Chavan. Police said further investigation is ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack and the circumstances leading to the shooting.
