Two more children from Meppayil Senior Basic School, Kozhikode, Keralam, who were admitted to hospital with vomiting, fever and diarrhoea, have been diagnosed with shigellosis. One of the three children admitted to the Government District Hospital had fallen ill earlier. Blood tests on all three children have now returned positive results. The children are aged 7, 8 and 10. Initial blood tests had returned negative results.

Children showing symptoms have been arriving at hospitals since last Friday. Over Saturday, Sunday and Monday, a total of 104 people suffered from vomiting, fever and diarrhoea. Patients sought treatment at private hospitals as well as the Government District Hospital. Those affected had eaten egg curry and curd as part of their school lunch.

Teams from the health and education departments, led by the District Medical Officer, inspected the school. Following the shigellosis outbreak, health workers visited 950 homes to distribute oral rehydration salts (ORS). The Health Department confirmed that wells at 290 properties had been chlorinated.
