Telangana gets 359 additional PG medical seats in government colleges for 2026-27, intake rises to 1,625
With this expansion, 23 of the State’s 35 government medical colleges will offer postgraduate courses, compared with 10 colleges earlier
Telangana has secured approval for 359 additional postgraduate (PG) medical seats in its government medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic year, taking the total number of seats in government institutions from 1,266 to 1,625. The expansion will enable students to pursue postgraduate medical education in 13 government medical colleges where PG courses are being introduced for the first time.
With this expansion, 23 of the State’s 35 government medical colleges will offer postgraduate courses, compared with 10 colleges earlier. The National Medical Commission (NMC), through its Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), issued an updated PG broad speciality seat matrix on November 6, incorporating additional seats approved for the academic year 2026-27.
The 13 government medical colleges receiving PG seats for the first time are located in Nagarkurnool, Mahabubabad, Wanaparthy, Mancherial, Kamareddy, Rajanna Sircilla, Khammam, Karimnagar, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Jangaon, Nirmal, Sangareddy and Narsampet.
Apart from the seats in government medical colleges, the State has received approval for additional 107 PG seats at the Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, and another 106 seats at the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College, Sanath Nagar.
Private medical colleges in Telangana account for approximately 2,600 postgraduate seats, according to the State government’s press note. The NMC’s updated matrix separately lists 2,228 seats under the private category and 350 seats under the deemed university category, taking the combined intake to 2,578.
In its November 6 public notice, the NMC directed medical colleges and institutions granted permission to start new PG broad speciality courses or increase the intake of existing courses to submit the requisite electronic bank guarantees (e-BGs) within seven days of the notice.
The Letters of Permission-cum-Disapproval (LoP-cum-LoD) for newly approved courses and increased intake will be issued only after the NMC receives and verifies the required bank guarantees. The colleges have been asked to furnish the details in the prescribed format to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board.
The Commission has also instructed central and State counselling authorities to consider the latest notified seat matrix while conducting admissions. Colleges have been directed to admit students only against the number of seats approved by the NMC. Admissions beyond the approved annual intake will constitute a regulatory violation and may attract action under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.
