AWA debunks reports of aircraft technical fault and passenger evacuation at Kumasi Airport

Africa World Airlines (AWA) has dismissed social media reports claiming that one of its aircraft developed a technical problem at Kumasi Airport, resulting in the evacuation of passengers, describing the claims as false. The airline said the demonstration flights are mandatory under the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) regulations and must be completed before the aircraft can begin scheduled commercial operations.

Africa World Airlines (AWA) has dismissed social media reports claiming that one of its aircraft developed a technical problem at Kumasi Airport, resulting in the evacuation of passengers, describing the claims as false.

In a statement issued on Saturday, November 7, the airline clarified that no such incident had occurred, urging the public and media organisations to disregard the circulating report.

AWA explained that the aircraft at the centre of the claims is its Embraer E190, which commenced demonstration flights on 5 November 2026 as part of the regulatory requirements for its introduction into commercial service.

The airline said the demonstration flights are mandatory under the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) regulations and must be completed before the aircraft can begin scheduled commercial operations.

It stressed that only flight crew and GCAA inspectors were on board during the exercises, with no passengers involved, making claims of a passenger evacuation entirely unfounded.

According to AWA, demonstration flights are a standard procedure when introducing a new aircraft type into service. They are conducted under the supervision of the GCAA to assess the aircraft's operational readiness and ensure compliance with safety requirements.

The airline has consequently urged the public and media organisations to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information about its operations rather than circulate unverified reports.

AWA also warned that it reserves the right to take appropriate action against individuals who knowingly disseminate false information about the airline.
