MMFL selects five teams for Fintech Lab finals

MobileMoney Fintech LTD (MMFL) has selected five teams from the Accra Zonal Hackathon Pitch Competition of the 2026 MoMo Fintech Lab to advance to the National Mentorship Programme. Speaking at the event, the Chief Products and Services Officer of MMFL, Sylvia Otu Achempong, said the journey began a few weeks ago with the launch of a technology-based competition for developers, entrepreneurs, and startups, creating a platform to bring the ecosystem together, involving banks, fintech companies, the central bank, and other partners.

MobileMoney Fintech LTD (MMFL) has selected five teams from the Accra Zonal Hackathon Pitch Competition of the 2026 MoMo Fintech Lab to advance to the National Mentorship Programme.

The selection is part of the company’s efforts to nurture commercially viable financial technology solutions in Ghana.

The Accra competition, held as part of the Southern Sector MMFL Fintech Lab Hackathon, brought together developers, entrepreneurs and startups to present technology-based solutions to everyday challenges.

”Following the competitions, MMFL began the zonal competitions, giving participants the opportunity to present their ideas and demonstrate how technology could address everyday challenges.

The competition started in Tamale, where 12 participants presented their ideas, and five were selected to advance.

As the competition progressed across the zones, organisers continued to see promising ideas and considerable enthusiasm from participants.

During the Accra hackathon, Mrs Acheampong served as a judge and also delivered the keynote address on behalf of the leadership of MMFL.

We heard 10 presentations covering areas such as small business support, savings, spending, and waste management, with mobile money serving as a platform for these solutions,” she said.

Five outstanding teams emerged, each proposing a solution to a pressing problem. The winning solution addresses language barriers in digital financial services.

Mrs Achempong explained that not everyone can read or easily understand the text-based interfaces used in digital financial services. “The team developed a model that allows users to interact with services through voice in multiple languages, helping to make those services more accessible,” she said.

She commended the partners who have devoted their time and expertise to coaching the participants and helping them refine their ideas.

Throughout this journey, our partners have devoted their time and expertise to coaching the participants and helping them refine their ideas, she noted.

According to her, the next step is to help the ideas develop into viable businesses. “Our next step is to help these ideas develop into viable businesses.

We want this platform to produce startups and solutions that can grow and serve customers,” she said.

To achieve this, MMFL will continue to provide technical support and help participants strengthen their business skills.

Mrs Acheampong said participants would also be encouraged to test their solutions with customers, gather feedback and use those insights to improve their products. “We hope that all 15 contestants emerging from the zonal competitions will return with stronger, more developed solutions,” she said.

Bringing a competition of that scale together, she said, requires considerable effort, but the response has shown the value of continuing and expanding it.“We will challenge ourselves to do more, broaden participation and encourage more people to develop the confidence to put their ideas forward,” she said.

She disclosed that this year, MMFL received 1,791 applications for the competition — the highest number recorded since it began running competitions of that kind.
