Fulham celebration
Nigerian internationals Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi emerged victorious in the Premier League’s Nigerian derby on Saturday as Fulham secured a late 1-0 win over Coventry City, featuring compatriots Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka.
Oscar Bobb scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute to hand Fulham all three points in a closely contested encounter.
Bassey played the entire match, while Iwobi was substituted in the 74th minute. Awoniyi and Onyeka both came on in the 67th minute as Coventry sought to change the course of the game, but Fulham held on for victory.
The result continued Fulham’s gradual climb up the table, moving them to 13th with eight points from eight matches.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa ended Manchester City’s perfect Premier League start with a 2-1 victory, allowing Arsenal to draw level with the champions at the top of the standings.
Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Villa, opening the scoring inside six minutes before restoring the hosts’ lead after Erling Haaland had equalised in the second half.
The victory extended Villa’s impressive run to six wins in seven matches across all competitions, strengthening their position after a difficult start to the campaign.
City’s defeat provided Arsenal with an opportunity to close the gap, and Mikel Arteta’s side took full advantage with a 2-0 home win over Everton.
Ezri Konsa opened the scoring after seven minutes, ending Arsenal’s wait for a set-piece goal in open play this season. Gabriel Magalhaes sealed the victory with a header in the 68th minute.
The result moved Arsenal level on points with Manchester City, with goal difference separating the two sides.
Tottenham Hotspur also continued their resurgence with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, securing their second league win of the week.
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to give Tottenham the lead before Cole Palmer was sent off in the 80th minute for a second bookable offence.
Mathys Tel added a late second to complete the victory, lifting Tottenham to 12th place and extending Chelsea’s difficult run.
The weekend’s results further intensified the competition at both ends of the Premier League table, with Arsenal keeping pace with Manchester City and Fulham gaining valuable ground after their victory over Coventry.
