Raichur Superintendent of Police Arunangshu Giri on Monday urged the youth to stay away from substance abuse and draw inspiration from the life of Maharshi Valmiki to contribute meaningfully to society and the nation.
Speaking after inaugurating the Valmiki Jayanti celebrations at Valmiki Bhavan on Ashapur Road in Raichur, Mr. Giri expressed concern over the rising consumption of alcohol and drugs among local youth, noting that it has led to an increase in physical assaults and group clashes.
Reminding youngsters of Maharshi Valmiki’s mastery of archery during his exile, he encouraged them to engage in sports and extracurricular activities to build discipline and stay away from bad habits.
He also stressed road safety, appealing to youth to strictly wear helmets and focus on higher education.
Delivering a lecture at the event, Basavaraja urged the State government to establish study centre at Maharshi Valmiki University in Raichur to promote research on the community.
He also called upon community members to make the full use of government welfare schemes, including scholarships, competitive exam coaching, loans for enterpreneurs and land rights.
Meritorious students and prominent personalities were felicitated during the event, which was attended by district administration officials, department heads and community leaders.
