AI company Anthropic files its IPO in hopes of raising $100 billion

AI company Anthropic files its IPO in hopes of raising $100 billion

Anthropic has filed paperwork for an initial public offering that could be one of the biggest in history. The company has yet to turn a profit.

Artificial intelligence giant Anthropic on Monday filed paperwork to make its stock market debut in what analysts say could be one of the biggest in history.

The initial public offering (IPO) could happen as early as November, reports say, with analysts putting the company at a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion.

The seven co-founders of the company, including siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, outlined their vision for the future of AI in a letter to potential investors.

"We believe AI is one of the most consequential technologies in human history," they said.

The AI startup behind Claude also addressed the societal risks of AI as they have done before, writing that the company's leadership might have to take unusual decisions to slow down the pace of development, even if that meant falling behind competitors.

The filing toward an IPO represents a major milestone for a company that was founded just five years ago.

Money raised at the IPO could provide the company with enormous resources to accelerate its expansion.

Anthropic is set to trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol "ANT."

But the company is yet to disclose how many shares it plans to sell and what price, leaving that space blank in its paperwork filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday.

Anthropic filed confidentially with the SEC in June and that gave the agency time to go over the company's financial credentials before they were made available to the public and potential investors.

Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are the lead underwriters.

The San Francisco-based company was founded by members who defected from OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, in 2021.

OpenAI, Anthropic's main rival, is also set to debut on the stock market next year.

Both IPOs are taking place amid growing concern about AI and the race to develop AI infrastructure, including data centers that consume vast amounts of energy.

The document filed by Anthropic shows that the company has seen massive revenue growth but is yet to turn a profit, much like its AI rivals.

Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026. That compares to a loss of $13 billion in the same period a year earlier.

Despite the losses, the company said that it had $112.4 billion in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30.

And as for money raised at the IPO, the offering could bring in as much as $100 billion, according to reports, surpassing the current record set by Elon Musk's SpaceX that ultimately raised $86 billion in what was the biggest IPO on record to date.
