Medical centre targeted in Melbourne arson attack

Medical centre targeted in Melbourne arson attack

Police are investigating a suspected arson attack at the Moonee Vale Clinic overnight, as well as a separate incident outside a Brighton home.

A medical centre in Melbourne's north-west has been extensively damaged in a suspected arson attack overnight.

Police said the clinic on Shuter Street in Moonee Ponds was set alight in the early hours of this morning.

"It appears offenders smashed a front window of the Shuter Street business before an accelerant was used, and it was set alight just after 2am," a Victoria police spokesperson said.

"The centre has been extensively damaged internally by fire and smoke."

The Moonee Vale Clinic is a general practice specialising in women's health, as well as cosmetic and skin cancer treatments.

The clinic is next door to a beauty salon that has been targeted in arson attacks previously.

Police will investigate whether this latest attack is linked to the previous incident.

About an hour prior to this morning's Moonee Ponds attack, two cars were set alight in a separate attack in Melbourne's south-east.

Police are investigating the suspected targeted arson attack on Manor Street in Brighton about 1:20am.

"Detectives believe offenders rammed the front gate of the home before accelerant was poured along the driveway towards the home and on two parked vehicles, which were set alight," a police spokesperson said.

"The residents of the home weren't injured however the cars were totally destroyed."

An arson chemist will attend both scenes today while an investigation into the two incidents is ongoing.
