Darwin city mall reopened after false report of 'credible threat'

Darwin's Smith Street Mall has reopened to the public following what police say was a false report of a "credible threat" this morning.

Darwin's Smith Street Mall has reopened to the public following what police say was a false report of a "credible threat" this morning.

Workers were earlier evacuated from the mall's Darwin Innovation Hub building and residents were advised to avoid the area.

Speaking to the media shortly after the cordon was removed, Acting Senior Sergeant Kodi Adcock said members of the public were now free to resume their normal activities.

"Earlier this morning the Northern Territory Police received a credible threat targeting the Smith Street Mall," he said.

"Police subsequently cordoned off the area and conducted a thorough investigation.

"That investigation resulted in it being deemed a false report, but I'd just like to remind the public that NT Police do take every threat seriously and that we will show up in force."

Acting Senior Sergeant Adcock indicated NT Police would provide a further update later today.
