Breaking: Alleged High Country killer Greg Lynn denied bail

Former Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn has been denied bail, as he waits to face a retrial over the alleged murder of Victorian retiree Carol Clay.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard Niall rejected Mr Lynn's bid for freedom this morning, finding the time he had spent on remand did not amount to exceptional circumstances warranting his release.

The former Jetstar pilot, 60, is due to stand trial in May 2027.

He is charged with murdering Ms Clay at a remote Victorian campsite in March 2020.

Ms Clay's companion Russell Hill also died, but Mr Lynn was acquitted over his death.

Mr Lynn has always maintained his innocence, arguing he was not criminally responsible for what happened to the pair.

Mr Lynn has been in custody since November 2021 and is currently housed at the Metropolitan Remand Centre.

Justice Niall this morning said Mr Lynn's period on remand was "not insignificant".

However, he did not believe it amounted to an exceptional delay with the trial booked in for the middle of next year.

"In my opinion, the time in custody and continuing delay does not amount to exceptional circumstances," he said.

Mr Lynn showed no visible reaction as the decision was read out.

He was supported in court by his eldest son, Geordie Lynn.

During a bail hearing last week, Mr Lynn testified that he felt unsafe in a maximum security prison unit and had been subjected to threats and physical attacks.

It included an incident when a bottle of faeces was thrown on him, and another when a fellow prisoner poked him in the chest.

He said the prisoner made threats towards him when he refused to be placed in a holding cell with the man.

"He was ready to explode. He was like Mount Vesuvius ready to erupt," Mr Lynn said at the time.

Mr Lynn also alleged fellow inmates were police informers who were willing to tell lies about him to police in order to receive a sentence discount.

Mr Lynn had proposed to live on bail with his son Geordie, who was willing to put up a $70,000 surety.

Mr Lynn's barrister Dermot Dann last week said his client had been cleared of Mr Hill's death, and should be given the "full benefit of the acquittal" at the upcoming trial.
