Man charged with murder over alleged fatal stabbing of partner

A 39-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of his female partner, who died in hospital last month after being allegedly stabbed twice in the chest.

A 39-year-old man has been charged with murder for allegedly fatally stabbing his female partner, who died in hospital last month.

On September 19, a Northern Territory Police spokesperson said the man dropped off his 47-year-old partner about 8pm at Palmerston Regional Hospital the previous evening, telling staff she was unwell.

"A medical assessment by staff identified that the [alleged] victim had suffered two stab wounds to her chest," they said in a statement at the time.

"The [alleged] victim has since been transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition."

The man was arrested that day and was initially charged with acts intended to cause serious harm.

On September 28, police said they had received confirmation of the woman's death and were liaising with prosecutors.

An NT Police spokesperson today said the man's charge had been upgraded to murder after he appeared in the Darwin Local Court.

The man remains remanded in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for November 2.
