Guwahati shootout survivor stable, post-mortem exams of five victims underway

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital Superintendent Devajit Choudhury said the bullet had passed through Mr. Pathak’s right hand without damaging any vital organs

The lone survivor of the shootout at a hotel in Guwahati was in stable condition, an official said on Tuesday (October 27, 2026).

Satyen Pathak was among six people who were shot at Hotel Bilas Inn on Monday (October 26, 2026) night in a dispute between the owner of the property and its leaseholder. Mr. Pathak is the lone survivor of the attack, while the rest died, according to police.

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Superintendent Devajit Choudhury said the bullet had passed through Mr. Pathak's right hand without damaging any vital organs.

"He is in a stable condition. He will require further tests and will have to remain in the hospital for a few more days," he said.

Mr. Choudhury said the post-mortem examinations of the five deceased were being conducted at GMCH, and the bodies would be handed over to their families after the necessary formalities.

All the deceased were associated with the hotel owner, with four belonging to the same family, police said.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta said the accused, identified as Ghanakanta Gogoi — the property's leaseholder, was apprehended in the Paltan Bazar area within an hour of the incident, which happened around 9 p.m.

The weapon allegedly used in the shooting, a licensed .32-bore pistol, was also seized, he said.
