A fire broke out at a chocolate and dry fruits shop on Market Road in Kannur city in the early hours of Tuesday, causing an estimated loss of ₹2 lakh. The timely intervention of the Fire and Rescue Services prevented the blaze from spreading to neighbouring commercial establishments in the densely packed market area.

The fire broke out at Emirates Chocolates and Dry Fruits, near Kambasaar Mosque, around 12.45 am. Passersby noticed smoke rising from the first floor of the building and alerted the Fire and Rescue Services.

Three fire engines from Kannur reached the spot and battled the blaze for nearly two hours before bringing it under control.

The fire originated in the area on the first floor where chocolates were stored. The shop belongs to V.C. Ahmed, a native of Koothuparamba. The fire destroyed the front glass panels, ACP sheets and electrical wiring of the establishment. The preliminary assessment puts the loss at around ₹2 lakh.

The flames also spread to the adjacent shop. However, firefighters managed to extinguish the fire before it could cause extensive damage to the neighbouring establishment.

The incident occurred at an area where several shops are located close to one another, raising the risk of the fire spreading rapidly.

District Fire Officer B. Raj, Assistant Station Officer Joy, Senior Fire and Rescue Officer M. Sooraj, and Fire and Rescue Officers assisted in the rescue and firefighting efforts.

A short-circuit is suspected to have caused the fire.
