The initiative of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) seeks to provide organised spaces for street food vendors, improve food safety and hygiene, and offer better facilities to customers

President Droupadi Murmu interacts with Anitaben Krishan Halpati, a tribal resident and beneficiary of the PM SVANidhi scheme, in Daman. The scheme aims to support street vendors while promoting local cuisine and tourism.

Mysuru is among 17 cities across the country selected to establish dedicated street food hubs under the Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme, an initiative aimed at supporting street vendors while promoting local cuisine and tourism.

The initiative of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) seeks to provide organised spaces for street food vendors, improve food safety and hygiene, and offer better facilities to customers.

The proposed hub in Mysuru is expected to provide food stalls, seating, drinking water, toilets, adequate lighting, signboards, solid waste management facilities, and digital payment options, along with arrangements to ensure compliance with food safety standards.

The facility is expected to improve the vending environment, help vendors enhance their earnings, and offer tourists a better experience of Mysuru’s local cuisine, according the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC).

Mysuru’s selection is significant given its rich culinary heritage, tourism potential, and reputation as a clean city. The project is expected to support local food businesses while adding to the city’s tourism attractions.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve urban amenities, promote cleanliness, and strengthen the livelihood of street vendors.

The hub is expected to provide an opportunity to showcase Mysuru’s traditional food and culinary culture to a wider audience while creating a more organised and hygienic environment for vendors and visitors, said MCC Commissioner M. K. Savita.

The project is part of the government’s efforts to promote inclusive urban development and improve livelihood opportunities for street vendors under the PM SVANidhi framework.
