Uganda Airlines has commenced scheduled commercial flights to Accra, introducing a new travel option between West and East Africa and raising prospects for improved regional connectivity, trade, investment and tourism.
The Ugandan national carrier began operations at the Accra International Airport on October 27, 2026, with four-times-weekly services linking Entebbe, Lagos and Accra.
The new route is expected to provide travellers with an additional option in a market served by established airlines, while potentially intensifying competition on airfares between the two African regions.
Speaking at the inaugural flight ceremony, Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, said the airline's entry into Ghana's aviation market demonstrates the country's growing appeal as a destination for aviation investments.
“The arrival of Ugandan airlines in Ghana represents a significant milestone in the growing relationship between the two countries. Beyond expanding travel options for passengers, this new service is expected to enhance connectivity, stimulate tourism and culture, facilitate trade and strengthen economic cooperation between Ghana and Uganda”, she said.
She noted that the development reinforces Ghana's position as a strategic gateway for regional and international air travel.
Chief Executive of Uganda Airlines, Girma Wake, said the airline's operations in Ghana would strengthen air connectivity between West and East Africa, making travel between the regions more accessible.
The service is also expected to facilitate business travel and create opportunities for stronger commercial relationships between Ghana, Uganda and other markets along the route.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe reaffirmed government's commitment to investing in aviation infrastructure to strengthen Ghana's position as a preferred destination for international travel.
He said continued infrastructure development would be important in supporting growth in the aviation sector and improving the country's competitiveness as an aviation hub.
Uganda Airlines' entry into Ghana comes amid broader efforts by African aviation stakeholders to improve intra-continental connectivity and reduce reliance on indirect journeys through European and Middle Eastern hubs.
Limited direct air links between African countries have long been identified as a constraint on regional trade, tourism and business integration.
The new service adds to the available connections between West and East Africa, with the potential to improve travel convenience and expand opportunities for businesses and travelers.
The launch marks another development in Ghana's efforts to attract aviation investment and strengthen its role in connecting African markets to one another and the rest of the world.
