ACB arrests Mirchowk inspector, home guard in ₹3 lakh bribe case

Inspector demanded ₹6 lakh to close case against complainant’s father, ACB says

Mirchowk Inspector of Police M. Kondal Rao and Home Guard Abid Ali.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Mirchowk Inspector of Police and a Home Guard on Tuesday for allegedly demanding ₹6 lakh and accepting a part payment of ₹3 lakh from a complainant in return for closing a case against his father.

According to the ACB, City Range-1 officials caught M. Kondal Rao on October 27 after he accepted the bribe through Home Guard Abid Ali. The ₹3 lakh in tainted currency was recovered from the possession of the home guard, the agency said.

The ACB said the alleged bribe was demanded in return for doing an official favour, including closing the case registered against the complainant’s father, avoiding coercive action, and providing future support.

The agency said the two police personnel had acted improperly and dishonestly to obtain an undue advantage. Both were arrested and are being produced before the Principal Special Judge for SPE and ACB cases at Nampally for judicial remand. The case is under investigation. The ACB has withheld the identity of the complainant for security reasons.

The agency urged people facing demands for bribes from public servants to contact its toll-free number, 1064, for action under the law.
