TV tonight: Robson Green stars in a rural culture-clash cosy crime drama

Robson Green stars in a rural culture-clash cosy crime drama. Robson Green plays ex-con and gambler Joe Ruby, who finds himself solving crimes on the Northumberland coast with Liz White’s Oxford-educated DI Rose O’Connell.
Northumberland is the stunning setting for BBC One’s new daytime mystery series. Plus: The Walking Dead plays what-if. Here’s what to watch today
2pm, BBC One If you enjoyed Sally Phillips’s recent Hairdresser Mysteries, here’s another daytime cosy (if slightly less camp) crime drama with a familiar face. Robson Green plays ex-con and gambler Joe Ruby, who finds himself solving crimes on the Northumberland coast with Liz White’s Oxford-educated DI Rose O’Connell. First up, the body of a monk is found in a priory. Hollie Richardson
7pm, Channel 5 More northern countryside goodness, this time with ex-Emmerdale actors Matt Wolfenden and Roxy Shahidi exploring Nidd Valley without any gadgets. Elsewhere, chef Matt Healy is catching lobsters in Flamborough Head and conservators restore Wentworth Woodhouse. HR
9pm, BBC Two After this instalment of the horticultural show, there are only two more episodes before the end of the series. With Monty Don having confirmed his departure, it’s worth soaking up every moment of his tips, centred on Don’s luscious Longmeadow garden. Alexi Duggins
9pm, Sky Atlantic The big divorce seems to be heading for a settlement but, in this cheerfully vicious drama, nothing is ever straightforward. A taut episode centres on St John (a frozen-blooded Pip Torrens) trying to bully opposing lawyer Nick (James McArdle) into submission. With his weak spot hit and hundreds of millions on the table, Nick starts to disintegrate. Jack Seale
9pm, Sky One If the apocalypse had never happened, could farm girl Maggie and drawling killer Negan have been friends, or more? That’s the premise of this alternate-universe episode of the horror drama, which gives the characters (and long-serving actors) a fascinating meet-cute in contemporary, non-zombified New York. Graeme Virtue
10.40pm, BBC One One of the nation’s favourite celebrities du jour, Hannah Waddingham, makes her debut on the red sofa. She’ll be sitting next to Cate Blanchett, fresh from her London theatre run, and Steve Irwin’s son Robert. Jorja Smith provides the live music. HR
How to Make a Killing ( John Patton Ford, 2026) 9.05am, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere Even attempting to remake 1949 black comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, that undisputed British classic in which Alec Guinness has a virtuosic turn as all eight members of the doomed D’Ascoyne family, is an audacious act of American cockiness. But then “audacious American cockiness” is exactly the vibe that star Glen Powell specialises in. He plays Becket Redfellow, the orphaned son of an estranged heiress, who believes himself entitled to the family fortune and will stop at nothing to secure it – not even serial killing in a succession of silly wigs. Ellen E Jones
Paralyzed By Hope: The Maria Bamford Story (Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley, 2026), Netflix If you’ve ever wondered how Maria Bamford got that way, here’s the answer: a documentary about the life of this true one-off – your favourite standup’s favourite standup – featuring interviews with Conan O’Brien, Tig Notaro and Stephen Colbert. Bamford also appears, of course, in an intimate interview recorded in her California home, and her singular voice guides us through archive footage, from home movies of her Minnesota childhood through to the basement comedy venues of her early career.
