As the cult director of Repo Man and Sid and Nancy prepares to release his final film, Dead Souls, he takes your questions

Everybody has their swansong, whether they know it or not. But for Alex Cox, his latest film Dead Souls – a darkly comic western loosely based on Nikolai Gogol’s 1842 novel – is billed as his final film.

If it really is his last film, the fiercely independent British film-maker can look back on a helluva run. He broke through with 1984 punk classic Repo Man, then went on to direct Gary Oldman as Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy. He made the political “western” Walker in 1987, starring Ed Harris – then from 1988 to 1994 introduced viewers to cult and overlooked films as the original presenter of BBC Two’s Moviedrome, essentially doing film nerd YouTube decades before YouTube existed.

He ended up making films in Mexico in the 1990s, including the brilliant Highway Patrolman, then returned to his home town of Liverpool for Three Businessmen and The Revengers Tragedy. Back in the US Cox made Searchers 2.0 (an update of the classic western), Repo Chick (a sequel) and sci-fi comedy Bill the Galactic Hero.

In Dead Souls, Cox also stars as Strindler – or is it Swindler? – a mysterious drifter roaming the American west offering to buy the names of dead Mexican labourers, before becoming tangled up with outlaws, crooked officials and his own increasingly tall tales. The cast also includes Edward Tudor-Pole – punk frontman, actor and former Crystal Maze host – so at least there’ll be someone around to tell Cox when his time is running out.

So is Cox about to do a Tarantino? Post your questions below by midday on Wednesday 4 November, and we’ll print his best answers as part of our Readers’ Interview series.

All About the Money review – confusion and compelling weirdness of wealthy leftwing heir

This profile of James ‘Fergie’ Chambers, who set up a commune in rural Massachusetts and is fighting extradition from Spain, is a brave attempt to package a complex character and story For a film that dispenses a lot of backstory information via intertitles, you are left with a lot of questions when the credits finally roll. For example, how in the world did Irish film-maker Sinéad O’Shea gain access to her main subject: James Cox Chambers, AKA “Fergie”, the American heir to a multimillion-dollar fortune – whom we first meet as the founding member and bankroller of a communist community of…
