Oil has hit its highest level in more than five months as fears of fresh escalation in the Middle East conflict grip the energy markets.

Brent crude, the international benchmark for oil, rose by 1% on Friday morning to $114.72 a barrel – its highest level since May.

The increase came after Tehran said it would strike oil facilities, undersea cables, datacentres and AI facilities in the Gulf region if a new US-Israeli attack was launched against Iran.

“Widespread reports that the US is considering renewed military strikes on Iran after the midterm elections rather than pursuing a diplomatic route was enough for the price to pop, after what many had considered would be a brief conflict is now in its eighth month,” said Richard Hunter at the broker Interactive Investor.

Oil had traded at about $72 a barrel back in February, before the Iran war began, but soared to $126 a barrel by the end of April.

Tensions in the region have been rising this week; Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps claimed to have struck four commercial ships in the strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. The US state department ordered some diplomats and the families of US government employees to leave Saudi Arabia, which has faced continued attacks from Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Susannah Streeter, the chief investment strategists at the broker Wealth Club, said fears were rising that American and Israeli forces would be ordered to launch strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure after the US elections on 3 November.

“At the same time, the attacks on Saudi Arabia’s facilities by Houthi rebels have intensified this week, and for ships attempting to cross the strait of Hormuz, it’s still a dangerous journey, with projectiles still being fired,” she said.

Streeter said Ukraine’s bombardment of Russian diesel refineries was also adding to supply concerns.

Oil hits five-month high as global stocks wobble on AI fears; retail sales in Great Britain fall as shoppers cut back - business live

Rolling coverage of the latest economic and financial news Rob Wood, chief UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, says the biggest news is from S&P’s PMI data is the composite employment index rising above 50 for the first time since the 2024 budget. Geopolitics, and notably the potential for conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine to add to energy market volatility, are, however, clearly still unsettling many businesses, and cost of living concerns and broader fiscal worries are being compounded by the shift to higher borrowing costs.

US and Israel are warned against launching fresh strikes on Iran

Multinational ‘anti-war bloc’ uses Istanbul summit to call for a diplomatic solution to Middle East crisis Foreign ministers at a summit of eight European and Middle Eastern countries have urged the US and Israel not to renews their attacks on Iran, warning a fresh outbreak of fighting would spread conflict and push oil prices even higher. The development of a new multinational “anti-war bloc” represents a challenge to the increasingly open plans by the US and Israel to relaunch strikes on Iran while talks on Tehran’s nuclear programme remain deadlocked.

Violence, intimidation and fear: 10 years on from the ‘Jungle’, life in Calais migrant camps is harsher than ever

People living in tents in northern France hoping to find asylum in England face increasing intimidation from police and far-right agitators In the decade since the demolition of the “Jungle”, an area of Calais where thousands of asylum seekers set up makeshift shelters before embarking on Channel crossings to the UK, everything and nothing has changed. This week, in a woodland clearing not far from one of Calais’s busy main roads, several brightly coloured tents are pitched.
