South Central Railway (SCR), in order to further enhance the safety in train operations, has introduced 1,800 GPS tracker devices to the patrolmen/trackmen covering all the three divisions of Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Nanded.

These devices are intended to assist patrolmen and track maintainers who play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and punctual movement of trains. These frontline railway workers inspect tracks, bridges and other infrastructure round the clock to detect defects and prevent accidents.

Every day and night, patrolmen walk along railway lines and bridges carrying essential equipment while keeping a close watch on track conditions. Depending on the section assigned, they cover distances ranging from three kilometres on single-line routes to six kilometres on double-line routes during each patrol.

Their responsibilities include checking for loose fish bolts, defects in switches and crossings, damaged fittings on girder bridges and open-top culverts, broken or burnt sleepers, damaged plates and tie bars, and other track-related issues. They also monitor water levels and the flow of water near railway infrastructure, particularly during adverse weather conditions, according to senior railway officials.

Whenever a patrolman notices a broken rail, damaged weld, ballast washout, theft of fittings or any other serious defect, he is required to immediately protect the track as per railway safety rules, take preliminary corrective measures wherever possible and alert the nearest Station Master, Permanent Way Inspector and his supervisor.

The GPS-enabled devices will also allow supervisors to monitor patrolmen’s movements in real time. Each tracker, fitted with a SIM card, will be mapped to an individual patrolman and must be carried and switched on while on duty. The system will also alert supervisors if a patrolman deviates from the designated patrol route.

“This device will also help ensure the personal safety of patrolling staff by identifying their exact location. It has three alert buttons to contact immediate supervisors and an ‘SOS’ button for emergencies,” said SCR Chief Public Relations Officer A. Sridhar. The GPS devices will store movement data for up to six months, which can help railway authorities verify ground conditions and investigate any untoward incidents, he added.
