A senior aide to former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says five inmates at Nsawam Prison have been transferred following an alleged plot to poison the politician.
Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah disclosed the development on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, explaining that the alleged plot came to light after someone reportedly overheard the inmates discussing plans to poison Mr Wontumi.
He said Mr Wontumi informed him about the incident when they spoke about his health following a court appearance on Tuesday, October 27.
Dr Boakye-Danquah also said he had visited the prison over the weekend on an errand for the incarcerated NPP stalwart’s lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea.
According to the aide, the person who allegedly overheard the conversation alerted Mr Wontumi, prompting concerns about his safety.
“I contacted the officer in charge, and he confirmed it and assured me that investigations were ongoing. The officer said a committee has been set up to probe the incident,” Dr Boakye-Danquah said.
He indicated that the five inmates had since been moved to a different cell, while investigations into the alleged plot continued.
The aide did not disclose the identities of the inmates, saying they had not been made known to him.
Despite the development, Dr Boakye-Danquah said Mr Wontumi remained calm and was not frightened by the alleged threat.
“Chairman Wontumi is not frightened,” he said, recounting the politician’s response during their conversation.
He expressed confidence that the alleged plot would not succeed, adding: “But we know the good God we serve will not let the plan of the evil one prevail.”
Dr Boakye-Danquah further disclosed that he was visiting the Nsawam Prison on Wednesday morning to visit Mr Wontumi and follow up on his welfare.
The disclosure comes as Mr Wontumi marks 100 days in prison.
