Reps Call For INEC Briefing On 2027 Election Readiness

The House of Representatives has passed a resolution for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Joash Amupitan, to, within the next seven legislative days, brief the House Committee on Electoral Matters on the Commission’s readiness for the 2027 General Elections and national election readiness. The Commission had earlier fixed Saturday, 20th February 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections and Saturday, 6th March 2027 for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections pursuant to the Electoral Act, 2022.

The House of Representatives has passed a resolution for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Joash Amupitan, to, within the next seven legislative days, brief the House Committee on Electoral Matters on the Commission’s readiness for the 2027 General Elections and national election readiness.

Amupitan is also expected to give updates on the Continuous Voter Registration, PVC management, election logistics, technology deployment, personnel training, electoral security, risk assessment strategies, and budget implementation.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by the minority whip and deputy minority leader of the House of Representatives, which initially proposed that the INEC chairman brief the entire House.

The deputy speaker, however, opined that INEC had briefed the public in several fora on its preparations for the elections, hence no need for the House to invite the chairman to brief the general House.

He proposed instead that the briefing be done at committee level.

In preparation for the poll, INEC had approved and issued a revised timetable and schedule of activities for the general election.

The Commission had earlier fixed Saturday, 20th February 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections and Saturday, 6th March 2027 for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections pursuant to the Electoral Act, 2022.

However, following the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, which introduced adjustments to statutory timelines governing pre-election and electoral activities, the Commission has now reviewed and realigned the schedule to ensure full compliance with the new legal framework.

Accordingly, the Commission noted that the Presidential and National Assembly Elections will now be held on Saturday, 16th January 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections will be held on Saturday, 6th February 2027.
