Bihar MLC polls: Jan Suraaj Party opens account, JD(U)'s Neeraj Kumar 'wins' Patna Graduates seat

In the Patna Graduates constituency, JD(U)'s Neeraj Kumar has defeated the RJD candidate, though official results for the seat are yet to be declared

People gather outside the Bankipore Girls High School counting centre after the declaration of the Bihar Legislative Council election results in Patna on October 28, 2026.

The Jan Suraaj Party opened its account in the Bihar Legislative Council elections, with its candidate Suresh Prasad Rai defeating sitting Congress MLC Madan Mohan Jha by 324 votes in the Darbhanga Teachers seat, officials said on Wednesday (October 28, 2026).

BJP candidate Narendra Prasad Singh had on Tuesday (October 27) trounced his nearest rival, independent nominee Bhushan Kumar Jha, to win the Tirhut Teachers' constituency. Party nominee N.K. Yadav was also declared winner from the Kosi Graduates seat.

In the Patna Graduates constituency, JD(U)'s Neeraj Kumar has defeated the RJD candidate, though official results for the seat are yet to be declared.

BJP sitting MLC from Patna Teachers seat, Nawal Kishor Yadav, has lost to RJD's Sanjiv Kumar, sources said.

In the Saran Teachers constituency, sitting MLC Afaq Ahmed was defeated by independent candidate Rahul Raj, they said.

Election officials said the results for the remaining seats are expected to be declared by Wednesday (October 28) evening.

The MLC polls will decide the electoral fate of 90 candidates in four graduates seats and 60 nominees in four teachers constituencies.

The polling, held on October 23, recorded a turnout of 82.85% in teachers’ constituencies and 53.42% in graduates’ seats.

The Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Kosi Graduates' constituencies had a total of 4.92 lakh eligible electors, while the Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Saran Teachers' seats had 40,253 voters.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary congratulated the winning candidates in the teachers constituencies, and expressed confidence that they would work towards improving the quality of education.

Speaking to reporters after his victory, JD(U)’s Neeraj Kumar took a swipe at party leader Anant Singh.

“Where are you, Gunjan? Come and take the sweets,” quipped Kumar, in an apparent reference to a viral video purportedly showing Anant Singh speaking to his aid Gunjan Singh, telling the latter to distribute sweets even before the election results were announced.

Anant Singh, a don-turned-politician, had virtually revolted against the JD(U), campaigning for Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh. Singh was subsequently suspended by the JD(U) for alleged anti-party activities.

Reacting to the poll results, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav told reporters, “After nearly two-and-a-half decades, our party has registered victory in these elections.”

“In the MLC polls, the conspiracy by the NDA to add fake votes was also exposed. The EC should maintain transparency in the electoral process. The RJD came second in several seats. BJP’s Nawal Kishore Yadav had fake votes cast, yet Sanjiv secured victory (in Patna Teachers seat),” Mr. Yadav asserted.

The Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly also claimed that there was a severe crisis of jobs and investment in Bihar.

JD(U) State president Umesh Kushwaha said Neeraj Kumar’s win was “undoubtedly a historic victory for the NDA”.
