Health workers to lead stroke awareness drive in Palakkad

Nursing officers in the district received training on stroke symptoms and treatment ahead of World Stroke Day which falls on October 29. Stroke occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain is blocked or ruptures. High blood pressure and other lifestyle-related diseases increase the risk. Patients should reach a hospital within four-and-a-half hours of the onset of symptoms for certain time-sensitive treatments.
Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, facial drooping, difficulty in speaking, loss of balance and sudden vision problems are common symptoms. Anyone experiencing these signs should seek medical care immediately.

Health institutions in the district will conduct awareness programmes based on the ‘BE FAST’ method to help people recognise stroke symptoms. The acronym refers to Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech and Time. The campaign will highlight the need to seek immediate hospital care when symptoms appear.
The District Medical Officer said stroke treatment was available at the Government District Hospital. Sona N., general physician at the Government District Hospital, led the training session. The programme was organised jointly by the District Medical Office and the National Health Mission.
