Road crashes drop by 9.4% following TraffiTech sensitisation – MTTD

The Director of Education, Research and Training at the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, says road crashes reported across Ghana declined by 9.4% following intensified sensitisation and caution notices issued to motorists under the TraffiTech-GH pilot project. Traffitech-GH is an automated system developed by the Ghana Police Service to enforce road traffic laws and regulations and improve road safety in the country.

He said the police recorded 1,003 crashes in September this year, down from 1,108 during the same period in 2025.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, ACP Obeng attributed the reduction to increased public awareness and messages sent to vehicle owners, alerting them to traffic offences captured by the system.

“Within twenty days of September this year, when we enhanced sensitisation, gathering evidence and confronting vehicle owners with it with an embedded message, with GPS, MTTD sender ID sending messages saying ‘speed kills, reduce it now’ with your vehicle number, time and place of the offence,” he said.

He explained that a comparison of crash data for September 2025 and September 2026 showed a change in driver behaviour.

“If you compare the data of crashes from September last year (2025) with the same period this year, we have seen a significant change in behaviour of drivers,” he added.

ACP Obeng said the number of vehicles involved in crashes also fell from 1,928 in September 2025 to 1,693 this year, representing a 12.19% reduction.

The number of people injured in road crashes declined by 15.02%, from 1,405 to 1,194 over the same period.

TraffiTech-GH is currently being piloted and has not yet been rolled out nationwide. Traffitech-GH is an automated system developed by the Ghana Police Service to enforce road traffic laws and regulations and improve road safety in the country.

The system uses cameras and sensors to automatically take a picture and or video of vehicles that flout road traffic laws and regulations, such as speeding and running a red light
