Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has urged traditional rulers to maintain peace in their domain and avoid actions capable of triggering divisions and crises as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

The governor gave the charge on Wednesday at the 126th, 127th and 128th Combined Quarterly Meeting of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, where he urged royal fathers to place the interests of the state above personal sentiments.

Fubara stressed that traditional rulers have a responsibility to promote justice and fairness in their communities, noting that adherence to these principles is essential to sustaining peace and advancing development in Rivers State.

He said their conduct during the emerging political season would be critical to preventing conflicts that could become difficult for the government to manage.

“As we are entering into this political season, actively ensure that your conduct maintains peace in your place,” said Fubara. “Your action should not be what will lead to the division and multiple crises that we cannot manage as a government.”

He urged the traditional rulers to set aside individual interests and ensure that the collective interest of Rivers State remains their priority.

Governor Fubara also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the traditional institution, describing royal fathers as custodians of the state’s culture and leaders closest to the people at the grassroots.

He thanked them for their prayers and contributions to the peace and development of the state, assuring them that his administration would continue to accord the institution the respect it deserves.

Governor Fubara, who assured the royal fathers that their welfare remains important to his administration, also addressed concerns about statutory benefits due to them from local government councils.

He noted that such benefits were governed by established procedures but promised to address matters within his authority and communicate further decisions through the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Community Affairs.

He subsequently declared the combined quarterly meeting open, expressing hope that its deliberations would strengthen peace and development across Rivers State.
