The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has promised to strengthen electoral laws and enforce tougher penalties against electoral offenders if elected president in 2027.
Obi made the pledge on Wednesday at an NDC town hall meeting in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, where he outlined his proposed reforms to Nigeria’s electoral system, emphasising accountability, transparency and strict adherence to the rule of law.
He said his administration would prioritise strengthening political parties and improving electoral processes to prevent manipulation and restore public confidence in elections.
According to him, electoral fraud will attract prosecution, including imprisonment for officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other individuals found culpable in manipulating election results.
Obi also advocated stricter requirements for candidates seeking elective office, proposing that aspirants should demonstrate that they attended primary and secondary school.
He warned that individuals who forged academic certificates or falsely claimed to possess the required educational background should face legal consequences.
The former Anambra State governor maintained that public officeholders and citizens alike must be subject to the law, regardless of their status or position.
He said his political ambition was driven by the need to build a Nigeria where institutions function effectively, electoral rules are respected, and no individual is above the law.
Obi’s remarks came as political parties and prospective candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with electoral credibility and the integrity of the voting process expected to remain major issues in the campaign.
His proposed reforms would require appropriate legal and institutional measures to ensure effective implementation, while any changes to candidate eligibility requirements would need to conform to Nigeria’s constitutional and electoral framework.
The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2026, while the governorship and Houses of Assembly elections are slated for February 6, 2026.
