Three schoolgirls from Tiruvannamalai rescued at Kilambakkam bus terminus

The girls were handed over to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for counselling before reuniting with the family members

Three schoolgirls, who were reported missing from Tiruvannamalai, were rescued by a special team of the District Police at Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam near Tambaram on Wednesday.

The police said based on a tip-off, a special police team led by Superintendent of Police (SP) R. Uthayakumar and Rahul B. Gopal, Assistant SP, rescued three girls at the terminus around 2 a.m.

The three girls - A. Mahalakshmi, 15, A. Maheshwari, 14, and R. Nithya, 13, had left their house after their parents scolded them for not going to school for nearly a month. Together, they had saved ₹1,500. With the available money, they left for Chennai where they reportedly visited Marina Beach and other tourist spots before returning to the bus terminus in Kilambakkam to board a bus to Tiruvannamalai.

The police said as the children got tired after they visited several places in the city, they slept at the terminus before the police team found them. The schoolgirls were brought to the hometown by the police team.

Collector Vandhana Garg appreciated the police for speedy rescue of the schoolgirls. The girls were handed over to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for counselling before reuniting with the family members.

The police said that the girls’ parents stayed in Kerala for work as wage labourers, and they visited home occasionally. The three children were under the care of Unnamalai, 65, who stayed at a rented house in Thandrampattu village.

Two siblings Maheshwari and Maheshwari study in class X and IX respectively at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, while Nithya is a class VIII student at the Government High School in the village.
