Kenya’s road safety crisis is claiming thousands of lives every year, with pedestrians, motorcyclists and passengers bearing the brunt of a growing death toll that has renewed calls for road crashes to be declared a national disaster.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recorded 3,995 road deaths between January 1 and October 4, 2026, a 9.2 per cent increase from the 3,657 fatalities reported during a similar period last year.

In December alone, at least 470 people died, making it one of the deadliest months in 2024.

NTSA data also reveals that Rift Valley region has the highest concentration of blackspots with 13 locations.

Motorists spend at least two hours in heavy traffic to drive through a distance of five kilometers.

The lawmakers want details of crashes recorded in Kenya over the years and their suspected or established causes.

Shortlist comes five months after the resignation of former CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan.
