Karpowership deepens investment in engineering education with TTU Scholarships

Karpowership has committed GH¢210,550 to cover tuition fees for 63 engineering students at Takoradi Technical University (TTU) for the 2026/2027 academic year, reinforcing its commitment to education, skills development, and building local expertise in Ghana’s energy industry. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of TTU, Prof. Ebenezer Boakye, thanked Karpowership for its continued investment in engineering education and the development of technical professionals.

Karpowership has committed GH¢210,550 to cover tuition fees for 63 engineering students at Takoradi Technical University (TTU) for the 2026/2027 academic year, reinforcing its commitment to education, skills development, and building local expertise in Ghana’s energy industry.

This latest commitment marks another milestone in the Karpowership-TTU Scholarship Scheme, established in 2022 to support brilliant but financially challenged students pursuing engineering programmes.

Since its introduction, the initiative has graduated 78 beneficiaries.

In a significant expansion of the programme, Karpowership has added Petroleum Engineering to the existing Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering disciplines for the 2026/27 academic year.

The move aims to broaden access to specialised engineering education and develop the skills needed to support Ghana’s evolving energy industry.

Presenting the scholarship cheque, Karpowership Managing Director Oscar Kojo Amonoo-Neizer said the initiative reflects the company’s belief in education's transformative power and the importance of investing in young people.

“For us, this support goes beyond financial assistance. It represents an investment in the potential of young people, the development of local expertise and the future of Ghana’s engineering and energy sectors,” he said.

Ing. Amonoo-Neizer explained that including Petroleum Engineering was a deliberate step to create opportunities for students to acquire specialised knowledge and skills relevant to the country’s energy sector.

He further highlighted Karpowership’s commitment to promoting women’s participation in engineering and other technical fields.

Through its all-female internship programme, mentorship and capacity-building initiatives, the company has reached more than 500 young women, providing opportunities for learning, professional development and career advancement.

“Our vision is to see more women become engineers, innovators and industry leaders. We believe that talent has no gender and that women must have equal opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the future of Ghana’s energy sector,” he stated.

He encouraged the scholarship beneficiaries to approach their studies with discipline, embrace innovation and uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. He also reaffirmed Karpowership’s commitment to deepening its partnership with TTU through mentorship, knowledge-sharing, professional development and opportunities to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor of TTU, Prof. Ebenezer Boakye, thanked Karpowership for its continued investment in engineering education and the development of technical professionals.

Drawing on his personal experience as a scholarship recipient, Prof. Boakye underscored the profound impact financial assistance can have on students’ educational journeys and future prospects.

“If I hadn’t gotten a scholarship, I wouldn’t have been here. So, when I see an institution like Karpowership giving support to students like this, I doff my hat to them,” he said.

He urged the beneficiaries to recognise the value of the opportunity and demonstrate their commitment through hard work and strong academic performance.

“To our 2026 scholars, you have won this scholarship, but you must work to merit it,” he said.

The President of the Sekondi Traditional Council, Nana Barima Ekow Gyesa II, also commended Karpowership for its consistent investment in the Western Region, highlighting the importance of the company’s continued support for initiatives that create opportunities for young people and contribute to the region’s development.

His commendation underscored the importance of sustained private-sector investment in education and human capital development, particularly in a region that plays a key role in Ghana’s energy and industrial sectors.

Mavis Leagbe, an alumna and beneficiary of the scholarship scheme, shared her experience and encouraged the current recipients to remain focused on their academic goals and make the most of the opportunity. She urged them to demonstrate through their academic performance that the investment in their education was worthwhile.

Beyond covering tuition fees, the Karpowership-TTU Scholarship Scheme reflects the company’s broader commitment to empowering young people, promoting gender inclusion, and developing local talent.

By helping students overcome financial barriers to higher education, the initiative contributes to developing a skilled workforce capable of supporting Ghana’s industrial and energy ambitions.

Through its continued partnership with TTU, Karpowership is creating opportunities for aspiring engineers, strengthening collaboration between academia and industry, and nurturing the next generation of professionals who will contribute to Ghana’s development.

Expanding the scholarship scheme to include Petroleum Engineering further demonstrates Karpowership’s commitment to equipping young people with relevant skills, broadening access to education, and investing in the future of the Western Region and Ghana as a whole.

Plant breeding is an investment in national economic development, not just a budget line

My engagements continued this week at the Crop Development Centre (CDC) at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, where I had the opportunity to reflect further on a conviction I have held for many years: plant breeding is not simply a budget expenditure, but a strategic investment in agricultural transformation, job creation and national economic development. The Saskatchewan Government and the National Research Council established the CDC in 1971 as a Centre of Excellence for crop breeding in Saskatoon, with a mandate to diversify Saskatchewan agriculture.
