New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2028 flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called for the abolition of a proposed pre-shipment inspection requirement for imported vehicles following a meeting with the leadership of the Vehicles and Assets Dealers Union of Ghana (VADUG).
The engagement focused on challenges facing vehicle dealers, including high import duties, delays in clearing vehicles at ports, access to credit, and competition from foreign retailers.
In a Facebook post, Dr Bawumia said the meeting was part of his stakeholder consultations to understand the industry’s concerns and explore possible policy interventions.
He said both sides agreed that the intended introduction of pre-shipment inspection of cars should be abolished.
The discussions also covered access to financing from the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank), with dealers seeking improved credit opportunities to support their businesses.
Dr Bawumia further highlighted concerns about the enforcement of laws designed to protect Ghanaian retailers from what the union considers unfair competition from foreign retailers.
He described the engagement as fruitful and said the respective teams would continue discussions to develop specific policies to address the issues raised.
He thanked VADUG’s leadership for making time for the consultation.
