TUTAG to suspend strike after talks with GTEC, technical university vice-chancellors

The Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) is set to suspend its strike after talks with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) to resolve the concerns that triggered the industrial action. GTEC has also agreed to exempt affected staff who held the rank of Assistant Lecturer or Assistant Research Fellow and met their universities’ promotion criteria before July 31, 2025, from the PhD requirement for progression to Lecturer.
The parties reached the decision at a meeting on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, where they agreed on measures to address the outstanding issues and restore industrial harmony.
In a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, the parties said TUTAG would consult its general membership and immediately suspend the strike while engagements continue towards resolving the concerns.
The industrial action centres on the non-payment of staff on post-retirement contracts, a directive requiring a PhD to promote Assistant Lecturers to Lecturers, and the classification of academic librarians as academic staff.
On the post-retirement contracts, the parties acknowledged that the matter falls under the Minister for Finance's remit. GTEC has agreed to facilitate a meeting involving the Minister, vice-chancellors and other stakeholders by November 14, 2026, to work towards a resolution.
GTEC has also agreed to exempt affected staff who held the rank of Assistant Lecturer or Assistant Research Fellow and met their universities’ promotion criteria before July 31, 2025, from the PhD requirement for progression to Lecturer.
Regarding the classification of academic librarians, GTEC indicated it did not oppose TUTAG’s position in principle. The parties agreed that the National President of the University Librarians Association would submit a technical paper for consideration and implementation.
The parties reaffirmed their commitment to continued dialogue and collaboration to maintain industrial harmony and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of teaching and learning in technical universities.
